About This Service

An Entry Gate That Sets the Tone for the Rest of the Property

A pedestrian entry gate is different from a driveway gate in scale and in what it's doing for a property. Where a driveway gate is primarily about vehicle access and security, an entry gate is more often about defining the entrance to a courtyard, a garden, or a side yard. It frames a transition. The design choices that work well at that scale tend to be more architectural than imposing, and getting the proportions right matters more than the amount of ironwork in the design.

A.G. Metalworks has been building and installing custom entry gates for Houston homeowners since 1982. We fabricate pedestrian entry gates, garden gates, courtyard entries, and side yard gates in wrought and forged iron. Most of the work we do in West Houston and Memorial right now leans toward simpler, cleaner profiles rather than the elaborate French and Spanish scrollwork that was common years ago, though we build to whatever style the homeowner prefers. If your HOA requires a design drawing for approval before we begin, we handle that as part of the process. We also fabricate driveway gates and iron fencing for homeowners who want a consistent look across the full property.

If you have a photo of something you like or a style number from the gallery above, that's enough to start. The free consultation covers the site, the design direction, and a clear proposal before any commitment.

HOA approval required? We handle the design drawing. Once we've settled on a direction together, we produce a drawing suitable for your HOA submission before fabrication begins. Entry gates visible from the street or from a common area typically require HOA review in most West Houston and Memorial communities. We can usually tell you upfront whether a design is likely to pass without revision.

Gate Types and Options

What We Build for Houston Homeowners

Entry gate projects vary by location on the property, the width of the opening, and what the gate is meant to accomplish. Most fall into one of these categories, though custom configurations are common and we build to fit the specific situation.

Pedestrian entry gates: Single-panel gates for a main entry path or front walkway. Typically 36 to 48 inches wide. The most common request for homes that want a defined entrance without the footprint of a driveway gate system. Can be designed to match or complement a driveway gate on the same property.

Garden and courtyard gates: Gates that separate a garden area, courtyard, or outdoor living space from the rest of the property or from the street. Scale and design are usually lighter than a security-focused gate. Often the focal point of a landscaped entrance.

Side yard and utility access gates: Functional gates for side yard access, pool areas, or utility passages. Design may be simpler than a front entry gate but should still be consistent with the rest of the property's ironwork. We size these for equipment access when that's a consideration.

Double entry gates: Two-panel configurations for wider openings or for entries where the visual weight of a double gate fits the architecture better than a single panel. Common in homes with a formal courtyard entrance.

Simple and clean profiles: The dominant trend in this market right now. Straight pickets, clean horizontal rails, minimal decorative detail. Well-proportioned and low maintenance. Holds up well in Houston's climate without the upkeep that more ornate ironwork can require.

Detailed decorative work: Scrollwork, forged leaf and floral motifs, arched tops, and custom pattern elements are still requested and still in our fabrication library. If you're working with a Spanish Colonial or French-influenced home, we have styles that fit that architecture. The photos above show the range.

Access control options including keypads and intercoms are available on entry gates where that's relevant, though most pedestrian entry gates in this market use a standard latch or a simple keyed lock.

How it Works

From Consultation to Installation

Most homeowners haven't hired a metal fabricator before and aren't sure what the process looks like. Here's how a typical stair railing project moves from first call to finished installation.

1

Free Consultation at Your Property

We come to the property, look at the opening, measure the space, and talk through what you have in mind. If you have a style number from the gallery or a photo from Houzz, bring it. If you're still deciding, we can help you work through the options on site. No charge, no obligation.

2

Design Drawing and Written Proposal

We put together a design sketch and a written proposal that clearly describes the scope and the price. If your HOA requires approval before we begin, we provide a drawing suitable for your submission at this stage. Most entry gate designs in West Houston and Memorial clear HOA review without issue, but we'll flag anything that might be a concern before you submit.

3

Fabrication in Our Houston Shop

Once the proposal is accepted and any HOA approval is in hand, we fabricate the gate in our shop on McGee Lane. Standard entry gates typically take one to two weeks to fabricate. Gates with more detailed ironwork run two to three weeks. We'll give you a specific timeline in the proposal.

4

Installation and Cleanup

Our crew handles the full installation including post setting, gate hanging, and hardware. Most entry gate installations are completed in a single day. We clean up when the work is done and walk you through the latch and any hardware before we leave.

Why A.G. Metalworks

Why Houston Homeowners Work with A.G. Metalworks

A.G. Metalworks has been building and installing custom ironwork for Houston homeowners since 1982. We are the residential division of A.G. Welding, which means the same fabrication standards and welding certifications that qualify us for commercial structural steel work go into every residential gate we build. Our welders are certified to AWS D1.1 standards, our crews are OSHA trained, and we are a City of Houston certified fabricator.

We've built enough entry gates in Houston to know which designs age well and which ones become maintenance problems. If something about a design you're considering is going to cause issues down the road, we'll tell you that during the consultation rather than after the gate is installed. The goal is a gate that looks right for the property and holds up without constant attention.

Common Questions

Entry Gate Questions We Hear Often

What is the difference between an entry gate and a driveway gate?

A driveway gate is designed for vehicle access and is typically eight to fourteen feet wide. An entry gate is a pedestrian gate, usually 36 to 60 inches wide, used for a walkway, garden, courtyard, or side yard entrance. The design considerations are different because the scale is different. Entry gates tend to be more architectural in character and less focused on the security function that a driveway gate prioritizes.

Do I need HOA approval for an entry gate?

It depends on where the gate is located. Entry gates visible from the street or from a common area typically require HOA review in most West Houston and Memorial communities. Side yard or rear garden gates that aren't visible from the street often don't. If you're not sure, we can help you figure out what your HOA requires. When approval is needed, we provide a design drawing you can include with your submission.

How long does an entry gate project take?

From accepted proposal to completed installation, most entry gate projects run two to four weeks. Fabrication typically takes one to two weeks for a standard gate, two to three weeks for more detailed ironwork. Installation is usually completed in a single day. If HOA approval is required, add that timeline before fabrication begins.

Can the entry gate be designed to match my driveway gate or existing fencing?

Yes. Matching existing ironwork is one of the more common requests we handle. If you have an existing driveway gate or iron fence, bring photos or let us see it during the consultation. We'll design the entry gate to be consistent with what's already there in terms of profile, rail spacing, and finish.

What finish options are available?

All gates are powder coated before installation. Black is the most common choice and holds up well in Houston's climate. Other colors are available and we can discuss options at the consultation. If you have existing ironwork on the property, we can match the finish.
