About This Service

Driveway Gates Change How the House Reads from the Street

Most homeowners who contact us about driveway gates have two things in mind at once: security and how the property looks from the street. In West Houston and Memorial, a well-designed iron gate does both without one compromising the other. The right gate, properly proportioned and finished to match the house's architectural character, becomes part of how the home presents itself rather than something added on.

A.G. Metalworks has been fabricating and installing custom iron driveway gates in Houston since 1982. We build swing gates and slide gates in wrought and forged iron, sized to fit your driveway opening and styled to fit your neighborhood. Automated opener systems are available for both configurations. If you need to submit to your HOA before work begins, we handle the design drawing so your submission is ready to go. We also build iron fencing and entry gates for homeowners who want a consistent iron aesthetic across the full property perimeter.

The process starts with a free consultation at your home. We look at the driveway, measure the opening, talk through what you have in mind, and give you a clear picture of what's involved and what it's going to cost.

HOA approval required? We handle that. Once we've agreed on a design, we produce a drawing you can submit to your homeowner's association for approval before fabrication begins. We're familiar with the typical requirements for communities in West Houston and Memorial and can tell you upfront whether a design is likely to pass without revision.

Gate Types and Options

What We Build for Houston Homeowners

Driveway gate projects vary significantly depending on the width of the opening, the grade of the driveway, the architectural style of the home, and whether the homeowner wants automation. The first decision is usually swing versus slide, and that's mostly determined by the property rather than preference.

Swing Gates

Two panels that open inward or outward from a center point. The most common configuration for residential driveways in West Houston and Memorial. Requires enough clearance on one or both sides for the panels to open fully. Works well on level driveways and most standard residential openings.

Slide Gates

A single panel that rolls along a track parallel to the fence line. The better option when the driveway slopes toward the street or when there isn't enough clearance for swing panels. Takes up more fence line space but operates cleanly on grades that would cause problems for a swing gate.

Beyond the gate configuration, here's what homeowners in this market typically ask about:

Wrought iron construction: The traditional material for residential driveway gates. Durable, holds a powder coat finish well in Houston's climate, and available in a wide range of profiles from simple picket-style panels to more detailed decorative work.

Forged iron with custom detail: For homeowners who want a more involved design, forged iron allows custom pattern work, scrolls, and decorative elements that wrought iron panels don't accommodate as precisely. Most of our style photos show forged iron work.

Simple and clean profiles: The most common request we see right now in West Houston and Memorial is a gate that's well-proportioned and well-finished without a lot of ornate detail. Straightforward picket panels with clean lines. That aesthetic has been moving away from the more elaborate French and Spanish ironwork styles that were popular years ago.

Automated opener systems: We install automated openers on both swing and slide configurations. Keypad entry, remote control, and intercom options are all available. We'll specify the right system for your gate size and usage pattern.

Powder coat finish: All gates are powder coated before installation. Black is the most requested finish in this market. We can discuss other color options at the consultation.

If you have a photo from Houzz, a design you've sketched out, or a gate you've seen in your neighborhood, bring it. We can duplicate pretty much whatever you're looking for and will tell you honestly if there's something about a design that makes it difficult to execute or maintain.

How it Works

From Consultation to Installation

Most homeowners haven't hired a metal fabricator before and aren't sure what the process looks like. Here's how a typical stair railing project moves from first call to finished installation.

1

Free Consultation at Your Property

We come to the property, look at the driveway opening, assess the grade, and talk through what you have in mind. If the driveway slopes significantly, we'll identify that at this stage since it affects which gate configuration makes sense. No charge, no obligation.

2

Design Drawing and Written Proposal

We put together a design sketch and a written proposal with a clear scope and price. If your HOA requires approval before fabrication begins, we provide a drawing suitable for submission at this stage. We're familiar with typical HOA requirements in West Houston and Memorial and can tell you upfront whether a design is likely to pass.

3

Fabrication in Our Houston Shop

Once the proposal is accepted and any HOA approval is in hand, we fabricate the gate in our shop on McGee Lane. Standard driveway gate projects typically run two to three weeks for fabrication. Gates with more detailed ironwork or automated opener systems may take three to four weeks. We'll give you a specific timeline in the proposal.

4

Installation and Opener Setup

Our crew handles the full installation, including post setting, gate hanging, and opener installation if applicable. We test the gate operation thoroughly before we leave and walk you through the opener system. Most driveway gate installations are completed in one to two days depending on scope.

Why A.G. Metalworks

Why Houston Homeowners Work with A.G. Metalworks

A.G. Metalworks has been fabricating and installing custom ironwork for Houston homeowners since 1982. We are the residential division of A.G. Welding, which means the same fabrication standards and welding certifications that qualify us for commercial structural steel work go into every residential gate we build. Our welders are certified to AWS D1.1 standards, our crews are OSHA trained, and we are a City of Houston certified fabricator.

For a homeowner, what that means practically is that the gate is built to last, the installation is done by our own crew, and if something needs to be adjusted we stand behind the work. We've been building iron gates in Houston long enough to know which designs hold up in this climate and which ones create maintenance problems down the road. We'll give you that perspective honestly during the consultation rather than just building whatever you ask for.

Common Questions

Driveway Gate Questions We Hear Often

What is the difference between a swing gate and a slide gate?

A swing gate has two panels that open inward or outward from the center, like double doors. A slide gate has one panel that rolls along a track parallel to the fence line. The main factor is your driveway: if it slopes toward the street, a swing gate may not open properly, and a slide gate is the better choice. If there's limited space on one side of the driveway, that also affects which option works. We'll assess the site during the consultation and give you a clear recommendation.

Can you add an automated opener to a new gate?

Yes. We install automated opener systems on both swing and slide gate configurations. Options include keypad entry, remote control, and intercom. The opener is specified based on the weight and size of the gate, so we determine the right system during the design phase rather than adding it as an afterthought.

Do I need HOA approval before installing a driveway gate?

In most Houston-area HOA communities, yes. Driveway gates are exterior modifications visible from the street, which puts them under HOA review in most neighborhoods in West Houston and Memorial. We handle the design drawing so you have something professional to submit. We're familiar with what most HOA architectural committees look for and can tell you upfront whether a design is likely to be approved.

How long does a driveway gate project take?

From accepted proposal to completed installation, most driveway gate projects run three to five weeks. Fabrication typically takes two to three weeks for a standard gate, three to four weeks for more detailed work. Installation is usually one to two days. If HOA approval is required, add that timeline before fabrication begins. We'll give you a realistic schedule in the proposal.

Can you match a gate style I found online or in my neighborhood?

Most of the time, yes. Bring a photo or describe what you've seen and we'll tell you what's involved in fabricating it. If there's a detail that's unusually complex or a design element that would create maintenance issues over time, we'll tell you that honestly and suggest alternatives. In most cases we can get very close to what a homeowner has in mind.

What finish options are available?

All gates are powder coated. Black is by far the most common choice for iron gates in West Houston and Memorial and holds up well in Houston's climate. Other colors are available. We can discuss finish options at the consultation and show you examples if you're considering something other than black.
